IFRC has a presence in Papua New Guinea for the first time in eight years. The new IFRC country office head in PNG, Mr Udaya Regmi started his role in November, and is keen to see the Papua New Guinea Red Cross Society become one of the country’s leading humanitarian organisations.

Udaya has 30 years’ experience with the Red Cross Red Crescent Movement and for the last four years has been the head of IFRC’s country office in Myanmar.

There, he assisted Myanmar Red Cross Society with organizational development, strengthening national society capacity and technical and financial support for their programmes. In Myanmar IFRC also provides healthcare and livelihood support to people affected by the conflicts in Rakhine and Kachin states.

This is Udaya’s first time working in the Pacific and he says there are both difficulties and huge opportunities.

“I can clearly see if we do the things right, there is huge potential for Papua New Guinea Red Cross to grow and help vulnerable communities throughout the country. Let’s work together to make the Pacific Red Cross national societies a partner of choice for humanitarian and development support in the Pacific.”

Mr Regmi says IFRC’s presence in Papua New Guinea will help the National Society scale up and build capacity in the areas of health, disaster management, communications and organizational development and he is looking forward supporting them.
