Innovation contest will provide support and funding for app development

The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC), in partnership with the World Economic Forum and the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship (NFTE) has launched a contest which asks young people to come up with a concept for an app that will help people make a positive contribution to their communities and improve their own skills at the same time. Winners will receive both mentoring and financial support to help bring their ideas to fruition.

The IFRC’s Rob Kaufman said the time was right to tap into the innovative spirit of the many thousands of creative volunteers who give their time to the Red Cross Red Crescent. “These are future leaders and change agents for the world. We are thrilled to give them a chance to win the World Series of Innovation and get the funding and mentoring through our new partnership with the Network for Teaching Entrepreneurship that will help them bring ideas to life,” he said.

The NFTE’s 2013 World Series of Innovation will feature the IFRC’s ‘Community-committed and job-fit’ category which calls for an app idea that will improve job prospects and enhance community engagement. The contest is especially interested in projects which can be adapted to regional contexts, and so could be used by many National Societies.

Tomorrow the IFRC will launch it’s long-awaited report into the economic crisis in Europe and one week later, the 21st issue of the World Disasters Report which looks at issues surrounding technology and humanitarian action. Both reports note the importance of technology in providing opportunities for individuals and communities to improve their skills and to engage with the wider world.

Contributors can take inspiration from one of the many first aid apps which have recently been developed by National Societies including the British Red Cross and American Red Cross, or can come up with completely novel ideas.

Further details and instructions for general submissions can be found at The specific IFRC challenge can be found at The deadline for submissions is 18 October 2013.
