17 March 2015, Geneva The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) and IKEA AG Switzerland have signed a lease agreement for temporary relocation of the IFRC Headquarters in Geneva to IKEA premises for three years during building reconstruction in Petit-Saconnex, Geneva.

The three-year agreement was signed by Elhadj As Sy, Secretary General of the IFRC, and Simona Scarpaleggia, CEO of IKEA Switzerland.

"This agreement is the result of a long process to identify the most suitable location for ensuring the continuity of the Red Cross Red Crescent humanitarian activities worldwide. This was made possible with the very good technical support from the Foundation for Buildings for International Organizations (FIPOI) and the professionalism of IKEA AG to facilitate contract negotiations and to understand our specific requirements as an international organisation," said Françoise Le Goff, Head of IFRC Administration.

Since 2011, the IFRC has been working on finding a long term solution to address the obsolescence of its buildings in Petit-Saconnex, and the substantial renovation required to respond to Swiss environmental standards, the technological upgrade and the evolving needs of its activities.

Following a careful study, the option of rebuilding on the existing site was determined to be most appropriate. Through the FIPOI  and the Swiss Permanent Mission, the Swiss Federal Council granted the IFRC a loan to start the initial engineering studies for a construction project. The new construction will begin in 2016 and is expected to finish in the Summer of 2018. During the construction period, all staff from the IFRC Headquarters will be re-located to temporary premises on the attic floor office space at IKEA’s premises in Vernier commencing 1 December 2015. The Office set up costs will be covered by IKEA.

“We have a great admiration for the humanitarian help that IFRC is providing all over the world. Therefore we are happy to contribute to these efforts by hosting the organisation and its 330 employees temporarily at a special rent rate. IKEA will begin the leasehold outfitting activities immediately to be ready for the IFRC by the end of the year,” Simona Scarpaleggia said.
