General: What does 'contingent upon confirmation of funding' mean?

Contingent upon confirmation of funding means that the recruitment process has been initiated and will proceed only if funds are confirmed.


General: What does 'candidate already identified' mean?

Candidate already identified means that a candidate who meets the specifications has been identified but the application is still open to competition. Applicants who believe they meet the specifications of job opening will be fully entitled to apply and to have their application considered in a fair and equitable manner.

General: What is the grade?


Each position in our organization has a certain grade attached to it. The grade corresponds to the ‘weight’ of the position in the context of the organization, which is determined by a series of factors including but not limited to, the level of responsibility, knowledge and skills and competencies the person fulfilling that post needs to have. The more responsibility, knowledge and skills are required for that post the higher the grade given to it. Higher grades correspond to higher salaries.

A new post is given a grade on the basis of its job description in which the responsibilities, required knowledge, required competencies and required skills are described. The giving of a grade to a post or job is done by HR using a job classification method, which is a way of systematically calculating what grade a post should have. Years spent in a given post do not modify the grade of that post.


General: What does ‘duty station status’ mean?

Duty station status is defined by whether it is a family posting or a non-family posting. This status depends on a number of factors, such as security conditions, availability of schooling facilities, availability of good health services, public amenities etc. It defines in the first instance whether a staff member’s partner or children are allowed to join the Employee in the duty station. This has also consequences on some benefits such as partner allowance, hardship allowance, rest and relaxation days.

General: What is 'accompanied status'?

Whether a post is accompanied or unaccompanied depends first of all whether this is a family posting. If so, the staff partner and/or child can join the staff in that duty station, but at the Federation’s expense only if the duration of the contract is above one year.

General: What are the different definitions of staff categories?

Federation Staff refers to any person in the service of the Federation, including Federation Contracted staff (Employees and National Staff) and Staff-on-Loan, to the exclusion of volunteers, interns and consultants.

Employee, as a sub-category of Federation Staff, refers to any person having concluded an Employment Contract with the Federation, whose Contract is not governed by any national labour law and which, by decision of the Federation, fall under the jurisdiction of the ILOAT. Volunteers, interns, consultants, Staff-on-Loan and National Staff are therefore explicitly excluded from this definition.

National Staff refers to an individual having concluded an Employment Contract with the Federation, which Contract is subject to national labour legislation, to regulations established by the Federation at national level and to the national court system of the country of his/her Duty Station (as may be modified by any Agreement between the Federation and the State concerned) and which does not fall under the ILOAT’s jurisdiction.

Intern is meant to be a temporary addition to the workforce and is considered to be working in a learning capacity.

Consultant An independent individual with a special professional expertise, who has established him or herself as such, and who is personally hired temporarily by the Federation to undertake a specific task.

Online applications: Do I need to adjust my browser settings to use IFRCjobs?

Please make sure that your network speed is above 128 Kbits/sec and that you are using a modern web browser, ie Internet Explorer (7+), Firefox (3+), Chrome, Safari or their mobile variants.

Online applications: What if I have forgotten my username and password?

Go to the login page and click on forgot password? Enter your last name, first name and email address in the space provided and then click Submit. Your username and password will be sent to the email account which you indicated.

Online applications: Can I change my password?

You can change your password anytime. To do so, log into your profile and click Change Your Password. Once you have changed your password, be sure to click Save at the bottom of the page.

Qualifications: What if my degree or diploma is not in the list?

The list of options for degrees and diplomas is intentionally generic, so that we can understand to what level you have studied. If your degree or diploma is not located in the drop-down menu, please select other from the list. In the text box below the menu, please indicate the precise title of your degree or diploma.

Qualifications: How do I include a degree which I have not yet received?

Please indicate the expected year of completion in the text box titled: Other educational details.

System: Is there a limit to the number of documents which I can upload?

Once you complete your personal information form, you can upload a Cover Letter and a CV to your application. Each file has a size limit of 5MB. We encourage all applicants to attach files in PDF format. Documents are also accepted in .docx format.

System: I cannot upload my cover letter / CV to my application. What should I do?

Our system allows for two attachments, a Cover Letter and a CV, each with a size limit of 5MB. We encourage all applicants to attach files in PDF format, we also accept .docx format. Process: How will I know that my application has been received?

You will receive an email confirmation when you create a profile. In addition, after each application for a vacancy, you will receive another confirmation email. You can also monitor the status of your application by logging into your profile.

Process: What do I do if I have not received a confirmation email?

Please check your junk/spam email if you have not received a confirmation email. In addition, you can log into your profile and check the status of your application. If you still have not received a confirmation, this probably means that your application has not been processed. Please contact and we will respond to you as soon as possible.

Process: What happens after I submit my application?

Your application details, experience and qualifications will be reviewed in relation to the position for which you have applied. If selected for the next stage of the recruitment process (link to recruitment process page), you will be contacted by telephone or email. If not selected, your application will remain in our database. You can log into your application anytime to check the status of your application and apply for other posts.


Process: After submitting my application how long does it take to get feedback from the IFRC?

In non-emergency situations, the process usually takes less than three months. During emergencies, recruitment process is fast tracked and usually takes up to three weeks maximum.

Process: May I re-apply for the same post if I have received a rejection letter after an unsuccessful interview?

If the position is reposted in the future, you may apply again.

Job Alert: How can I deactivate job alert emails if I no longer wish to receive them?

Whenever you receive a new alert email, there is a link which states: Delete Job Agent. By clicking on this link, you can log into your profile and deactivate any job alert email.

Internships: Who can apply for an internship at the IFRC?

In order to be eligible for an internship at the IFRC, interested candidates must be currently enrolled  in a university or equivalent level educational institution, or have graduated recently (normally within one year from the date of hiring) in an field that is compatible with the organizations’ activities. A minimum requirement for current students is an endorsement letter attesting to the fact that the intern is currently a registered student and will continue to be enrolled for the envisaged period of the internship.


Internships: What does the IFRC look for in its internship candidates?

The IFRC is looking for highly motivated students and recent graduates who share our values and whose competencies align with the organisation.

Fluency in written and spoken English is required. Fluency in another IFRC language (French, Spanish or Arabic) is an asset. In some cases, familiarity with a local language is desirable.

Internships: How and when should I apply?

Internship positions are published on our website. Interns are selected on a competitive basis. A candidate who wishes to be considered for an internship must submit an application via IFRCjobs stating their availability, field of competency and educational background.

The IFRC seeks to balance your needs and those of the organization. Most internships are thus offered on an ad hoc basis. We therefore encourage you to check the vacancy page on a regular basis in order to identify and apply for positions that match your profile.


Internships: Are internships full-time?

Internships at IFRC are generally full time; in some cases they can be part time.


Internships: What are the chances of employment after I have completed my internship?

The IFRC greatly values interns and their contributions to the organisation . However the internship is not connected with recruitment for employment within the Federation. Acceptance for internship shall not carry with it any commitments of future employment.

Internships: Are IFRC internships paid?

The IFRC will offer a stipend to help cover expenses you will incur while completing the internship in return for your valuable contributions. The allowance is competitive relative to other humanitarian organisations. The amount of that allowance is established by Human Resources (HR) in Geneva or in the relevant Office.

Internships: Will IFRC cover any of my expenses (such as travel, medical, insurance)?

Interns are expected to cover their own costs. The IFRC accepts no responsibility for medical insurance, or for costs arising from accidents and illness incurred during the internship. When selected, applicants must prove to the HR department that they have adequate medical insurance coverage.

Internships: Will the IFRC assist me with visa applications and work permit formalities?

A  letter to support the visa application process can be provided to those who need a visa to travel to the location where the internship will take place. The IFRC will make arrangements for working authorisations.

Internships: Does the IFRC provide assistance in finding accommodation?

The IFRC does not provide assistance in this regard. Finding accommodation remains the responsibility of the intern. However, the HR contact person in the relevant HR department may be able to provide you with information on accommodation.
