Alumni Association

The IFRC has set up an alumni association for the thousands of dedicated colleagues who have given a significant part of their lives to the IFRC—whether at headquarters, on mission or in country.

About our alumni association

Through the IFRC Alumni Association, former staff will be able to maintain contact with friends and colleagues and retain positive, lasting links with the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement.

Alumni association membership is open to former staff of the IFRC, both international and national, including those on National Society contracts.

The Alumni Association extends a warm welcome to all new members. Our current membership includes five former Secretary Generals, and the Chair of the Standing Commission. We have 1,230 members from 127 countries.

We look forward to keeping in touch with our former staff wherever they may be in the world and whatever roles they have moved on to.

What does the IFRC Alumni Association do?

The IFRC Alumni has five flagship projects:

  • Regular newsletter updates (known as 'The Distribution'): Twice a month, Alumni receive news and and information on a wide range of relevant topics. These include IFRC news and vacancies etc, book reviews on relevant topics, original research and analysis on new humanitarian thinking.
  • Alumni expertise. The association helps the IFRC applying the expertise of Alumni to current IFRC operations.
  • Alumni archives: Filmed interviews of those who played central roles in past emergency responses. Authentic human presentations, including any mistakes made, as a permanent record and also for use in improving current decision making.
  • Alumni mentoring: Connecting new staff, or those who have moved into new positions, to appropriate Alumni for informal advice and guidance.
  • Quarterly Zoom meetings: Key speakers giving frank talks to Alumni. Recent guests include Kate Forbes, IFRC President, George Weber former SG, and also  presentations on current operations  from the Palestine Red Crescent and the Ukraine Red Cross.
