This module guides volunteers and staff through the process of understanding community health, safety and resilience priorities. It covers assessment planning, ethical considerations, community engagement and the use of participatory tools such as community mapping, transect walks, focus group discussions, interviews and seasonal calendars. Participants learn how to collect, analyse and validate information with communities, transform findings into practical action plans, and use assessment results to inform programming and monitor progress. The module promotes community ownership, evidence-based decision-making and ongoing learning.
