This report presents findings and analysis from a climate action and environmental sustainability survey conducted with 67 Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies in 2021. The survey sought to understand National Societies' priorities on climate action and environmental sustainability, and how these are connected to strategic documents of the IFRC and our wider Movement (such as our Movement Ambitions to Address the Climate Crisis and the Climate and Environment Charter for Humanitarian Organizations). It also aimed to explore National Societies' perceived capacities and needs to deliver on the climate-related ambitions set out in these strategic documents. Overall, the report provides baseline information on the current priorities of National Societies in scaling up climate action, as well as their current level of capacity and engagement in working on climate change.
This study examines the effectiveness of support forNational Society Development(NSD) and its relevance for localization in five Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (in Indonesia, Kenya, Lebanon, Mexico and Turkey). It demonstrates that long-term purposeful investment in NSD increased humanitarian impact in challenging, diverse and complex environments. Why was this study needed? The World Humanitarian Summit in 2016 agreed a new agenda for the localization of aid, with participants committing to agreement called the “Grand Bargain” that would increase international investment in the leadership, capacity and delivery of local humanitarian organizations.Investment in long-term institutional capacity of local actors is a critical piece of the Grand Bargain – based on a shared understanding among those with long experience in the humanitarian community that it will lead to more effective and less costly aid. This study aims to back up this understanding by documenting how sustained investment and support to NSD has resulted in the profound and positive transformation of five different National Societies. In February 2022, the achievements of the Emergency Social Safety Net (ESSN) Programme in 2021 were presented at a steering committee meeting. And a new round of post-distribution monitoring surveys was finalized in order to gather feedback from people receiving ESSN support.
To ensure their continuous development in an ever-changing world, it's important for National Societies to assess their performance and capacities. Assessment is one of several ways a National Society can identify how it can improve the services it provides to communities and make sure they are sustainable. This guidance for Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies provides an overview of the different types of assessment and development processes and tools available to them, and how they can best use them to become stronger and more sustainable organizations.
This research report offers community perceptions of COVID-19 from migrants, refugees, host communities and indigenous populations in nine countries in the Americas: Argentina, Brazil, Bolivia, Colombia, Guatemala, Nicaragua, Jamaica, Panama and Trinidad and Tobago. It reveals the myriad impacts that COVID-19 has had, and continues to have, on vulnerable and hard-to-reach populations. And it offers hands-on recommendations around the impact and usefulness of health information; trust, awareness and access to vaccines; and the socio-economic impact of the pandemic. The summary and full report are available to download below. You can delve into these research findings in this interactive data story on our emergency operations data platform, IFRC GO.
The International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC) has demonstrated amazing resilience and adaptability as an organization and a network during the response to the COVID-19 pandemic. Since the beginning of the outbreak, Red Cross and Red Crescent National Societies have quickly adapted their way of working, building on local solutions, leveraging their auxiliary role, and striving to meet the growing health needs and demands of local communities facing social and economic consequences of the pandemic. In many cases, such consequenceshave increased and compounded local vulnerabilities caused by climate-related hazards and other crises. These experiences show that a strong preparedness for response mechanism is crucial and will continue to become even more important as we face the global consequences of climate change, the continued impacts of COVID-19 and future global health threats. Explore case studies below (available in English, French and Spanish) from around the world that highlight how National Society preparedness has contributed to the COVID-19 response. The two case studies from Indonesia are also available in Bahasa here and here.
